Although previously, I have not rated Mack and Mabel as one of my favourite shows, this production challenged this and I found it thoroughly enjoyable. This owed much to the convincing performances from all the principals. Jonathan Cammidge worked hard at creating the character of Mack Sennett and succeeded in gaining our sympathy when it really isnt justified. Similarly, we were drawn to Jackie Beatsons Mabel and we did have lots of sympathy for her. In addition to these outstanding performances, Julie Stirling was most convincing as Lottie and Scott Smeaton created a highly believable Frank. John Marshall and Jan Tadrowski as the backers Kessel and Bauman were a strong pairing, giving some light hearted relief. Stephen Burdis was imposing as William Desmond Taylor. Staging was extremely effective and great credit should go to the design team. The small orchestra gave all the backing that was needed and did not disappoint during the well-known overture. This was choreographer Valda Wicks swansong with the company. Over the years she has worked marvels in producing so much creative movement in such a small space. Her talent will be missed.
